The Sufficiency of God’s grace in a season of growth

Faith on Fleek

Growth is beautiful but often uncomfortable; it is refreshing but also labored for; it is evident but also a process that requires patience. What gives us the ability to carry growth is capacity and adaptability, and oftentimes you can’t have one without the other, like two peas in a pod; they go together.

The Lord instructed Abraham to leave everything he had and all he had known to go to a land he had never been to (see Genesis 12:1-3) This was not the easiest decision to make but what compelled him to go was his obedience and trust in God, ‘So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him’, Genesis 12:4 in the midst of the increase was intimacy – a man who knew the voice of His Lord, a man that understood the promptings and instructions he was being given, we call Abraham a father of faith but through his story we see that he was a friend of God, when God spoke he listened, when the Lord led him, he obeyed and walked along side his master and when the Lord asked him to sacrifice something he loved so much he didn’t think twice about it.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” – Genesis 12:1-3

The growth Abraham experienced was built through a relationship with God, which increased his capacity to receive more from God but also sharpened his character in order to handle what was laid ahead for him and generations to come.

God’s grace not only covers us, but it carries us; it’s the fuel to our obedience, and the vehicle to new seasons and territories. Whilst growth isn’t always easy, we can trust that all things will work together for our good (see Romans 8:28) because God has called you according to His wonderful purpose. It might look easier to rely on your knowledge in seasons that are new to you and not that easy to navigate; you might even want to first get the opinion(s) of people you know before making decisions, but that places the grace God gives you on the sidelines like a ‘just in case this doesn’t work out’ option – it’s you pushing aside a box with equipment that is meant to help you build the vision that God has given you.

And we know that God causes everything to work together[m] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. – Romans 8:28

Why does growing in God feel so uncomfortable right before the breakthrough?

Think about it this way: if grace were a box wrapped in gold and you opened it, slowly pulling out things like favor, strength, direction, and peace, why wouldn’t you opt for it? Maybe what needs to change is not the season but your perspective; God’s ways are higher than our own, and His wisdom is unsearchable. This is all the more reason to trust Him even when you don’t understand. God’s grace is sufficient to carry us through every season, moment, and situation.

Reliance on God’s goodness shifts how we see things – from lack to abundance, and weakness to strength. Your trust in God will determine how you receive what He is trying to place in your hands; that includes what you need for today. In the Lord’s prayer, we are told – Give us this day our daily bread, and that, my friends, is a worthy reminder that grace is available for us and growth is the response to receiving that grace.
